Frequently asked questions
Answers about planning, recipes, household sync and shopping.
What do the small ingredient pictures mean?
The illustrations help you recognise ingredients in recipes, preparation steps, your pantry and shopping. They are original Wochenbiss images stored locally, not product photos from a particular manufacturer. Visually identical variants may share an image; different forms such as tomatoes and passata stay separate. Unknown foods use a food-group image or a neutral picture. Quantities, allergies, Halal rules and nutrition are still calculated from ingredient and product data, not from the image. Check the actual product and its label. Preparation steps show only ingredients explicitly named in the text; the ingredient list gives the quantities for the whole recipe.
Where can I find American and Canadian dishes?
Under Recipes > World cuisines, choose USA or Canada. The catalog includes 80 additional American and Canadian dishes; international baking recipes extend these collections. Every recipe has its own image, ingredient amounts and timed instructions. Allergies, dislikes, Halal rules, available appliances and personal carbohydrate limits also apply here. Where nutrient references are missing, the affected values remain unknown; the app does not assess individual suitability for diabetes. Choosing a cuisine does not change your shopping country or shops.
Where can I find puddings with folded-in egg whites?
Under Recipes > Category > Puddings & flummery, or search for egg whites. The six variations are desserts, not breakfasts or main meals. Here, flummery means a pudding thickened with starch or semolina. Enable dessert for the day you want to plan it. Egg and milk allergies, wheat in semolina, Halal rules and carbohydrate limits still apply. Egg whites are folded in and then fully heated; there is no raw egg-white topping. The instructions describe four portions, while the ingredient display scales to your household. Follow the recipe, hygiene and chilling guidance.
How do I add a recipe to my weekly plan?
Under Recipes, tap Schedule, or open a recipe and choose Add to weekly plan. Then choose a day and a suitable meal. If the space is occupied, Wochenbiss shows the current dish and a button to replace it. Shopping is recalculated from the updated plan; the recipe is not counted twice. Other spaces stay unchanged. Exclusions, Halal rules, carbohydrate limits and repetition limits still apply.
Where can I find soups and regional specialities?
Recipes includes Soups & stews and World cuisines. Older recipes are also classified by their recorded cuisine, our curated collections or a recognisable dish style. Cuisine describes culinary inspiration, not necessarily historical origin. General bowls and original dishes without a clear regional association appear under International & everyday cooking. For 18 countries or regions, you can also select only our ten curated specialities. This is not a statistical ranking. England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales are listed separately. African dishes name their specific regions in the recipe. Allergies, Halal rules, appliances and other household filters still apply and may reduce results. Your shopping country, currency and shops stay unchanged.
How do I get started?
When you first open the app, the assistant guides you through household, meals and exclusions in three steps. Your weekly plan is then ready. You can restart the assistant at any time from the settings cog.
Where are the main sections?
Plan, Recipes, Shopping and Saved appear at the bottom on phones and at the top on larger screens. The settings cog opens more settings, FAQ and privacy information.
Which app languages are confirmed?
German and English are confirmed. French, Italian and Rumantsch Grischun are local previews for review, not fully released app languages. Translated webpages do not change that status. Language and shopping country are separate settings. The options shown depend on your installed version.
Does Wochenbiss detect my country?
Yes. On first launch, Wochenbiss reads only the device's country region to preselect Germany, Austria, Switzerland or the United States. You confirm it in setup. Later, open Settings & help > Country and region to change it. Your choice is stored locally and controls shops, delivery services and currency, not the language or recipe cuisine. Individual providers may only be available regionally. No GPS access is needed.
Can I use Wochenbiss in the United States?
Yes. Choose United States in setup or under Settings & help > Country and region. The initial market selection contains Walmart, Target, Kroger, ALDI USA, Whole Foods Market and Safeway. Under Shopping > Shop by region, review your remaining quantities in metric or US customary units, copy or share the list, and open retailer websites. Deselected shops are omitted. No carts are filled automatically and no live prices are promised. Your own prices are saved in USD; taxes, deposits and extra charges are excluded. Euro estimates are not relabelled. The original quantities are preserved: weight is not converted to cups or liquid measures without verified density data. Allergies, Halal rules and carbohydrate limits still apply; you must check the actual US products and replacements yourself.
Which shops are listed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland?
The initial selection depends on your chosen country. Germany includes, for example, Aldi, Lidl, REWE and Edeka. Austria includes HOFER, Lidl Österreich, BILLA and SPAR. Switzerland includes Migros, Coop, Denner, ALDI SUISSE and Lidl Schweiz. Delivery services are shown separately and are optional. Always check the actual product range, delivery area and availability with the provider.
Why do I see euros, Swiss francs or US dollars?
Wochenbiss keeps price sources separate by country: euros for Germany and Austria, Swiss francs for Switzerland and USD for your own US prices. No catalogue prices are recorded for the United States; euro estimates are not converted or shown as dollars. Verified price records appear separately for each ingredient with provider, pack, source and date. They are not mixed with budget estimates to suggest a current full-basket price. The provider's final price is binding.
How many recipes does Wochenbiss contain?
The catalogue currently contains 1000 recipes. Under Recipes, you can search, filter by meal and load more results.
Where are the social media recipes?
Open Recipes and select Social media recipes. The collection contains 60 Wochenbiss variations on food trends, each with its own image. Household filters also apply. Drinks, snacks and sides are searchable but are not automatically planned as main meals. The recipe lists its inspiration and source.
Do Halal rules, allergies and carbohydrate limits apply to food trends?
Yes. The same rules apply to search, planning and swapping. Unclear mixed products are excluded as a precaution when allergy filters are active; strict Halal mode does not automatically allow unclear ingredients. Recipes with missing values are not planned when a carbohydrate filter is active. This is not a medical suitability assessment or Halal certification; check the actual products.
How are social media recipe amounts scaled?
The ingredient list adapts to your portions. Numbered steps describe the original batch size shown above them. More portions may require several pans or trays. Frying oil and soaking water are batch quantities, not amounts fully consumed per person. Cooking and baking times are not simply multiplied by the number of people.
Why are nutrients or prices missing for some new recipes?
Without reliable data, Wochenbiss shows Unknown instead of an invented zero. A complete modelled total price is then unavailable too. The shopping list and quantities remain usable; individual price records and your own prices may appear separately. New variations have been editorially reviewed but have not been kitchen-tested.
Can I add my own recipes?
Yes. Open Recipes and tap Your own recipe. Add a photo, meal type, time, estimated nutrients, ingredient amounts and at least two preparation steps. The recipe is stored locally and marked as a favourite, so it can be preferred in new weekly plans. Ingredients are scaled to your household and included in shopping.
Does every recipe have its own image?
Yes. Every recipe is assigned its own image file. When you swap a recipe, its image changes with it. If an image cannot load, Wochenbiss does not substitute an unrelated photo.
Can I swap a recipe more than once?
Yes. Tap Swap in your weekly plan and choose another recipe for the same meal type. The selection respects your exclusions and repetition limit. You can swap again; shopping and cost estimates are recalculated after each choice.
How do favourites and variety affect my plan?
The heart adds or removes a favourite. Under Refine plan > Household, choose Maximum variety, Balanced or Favourites more often. Allergies, dietary goals, appliances and nutrient filters always take priority. Tapping the heart does not change the current week; the setting applies when you create a new week.
Can I save several weekly plans?
Yes. Under Saved, you can save the current week, load earlier plans and delete plans you no longer need.
Which meals can I plan?
Choose breakfast, lunch and dinner for the whole plan. When you enable dessert, select the individual days you want it. Dessert recipes and ingredients appear only for those days. Dinner can be a hot meal, a bread-based dinner or a mixture.
How are people and portions calculated?
The household size determines the number of profiles. The portion factors for everyone eating are added together and applied to ingredient amounts. Small is 0.7, Normal is 1.0 and Large is 1.3; custom values range from 0.3 to 2.5.
How do I enter allergies or coeliac disease?
In setup or under Adjust plan > Allergies & taste, enter terms individually or separated by commas. Coeliac disease activates the stored gluten exclusions. Recognised synonyms, such as the German words Möhre and Karotte for carrot, are treated together.
Can I rely on the allergy filter?
No. It is a planning aid, not a safety guarantee. Always check ingredient lists, trace warnings, cross-contamination risks and substitute products on the actual product labels.
What does Halal food & drink do?
Enable it in setup or under Adjust plan > Diet & exclusions. Wochenbiss removes pork and alcohol from planning, substitutes suitable ingredients within the same recipe card and flags products whose Halal suitability you need to check on the pack. It is off on a new installation.
What do the Halal labels mean?
Halal-compatible means the recorded ingredients contain no known exclusions. Halal-adapted indicates a specific substitution. Please check marks a product that cannot be assessed clearly. Not Halal is excluded from planning. Text and symbols accompany the colours.
Are the recipes or products Halal-certified?
No. Wochenbiss is a planning aid and does not issue certification. A product may only be labelled certified where reliable evidence exists for that exact product. For meat, gelatine, cheese with unknown rennet, flavourings and similar ingredients, check the manufacturer's information, ingredient list and Halal seal yourself.
What is strict Halal mode?
Strict mode plans only clearly compatible or specifically adapted recipes. Ingredients with an unclear status are not included automatically. With strict mode off, those recipes may appear with a clear Please check label.
Can one household member select Halal?
Yes. Enable Halal for the whole household or in an individual profile. If anyone eating needs Halal, it applies to the shared weekly plan and therefore the shopping list.
What happens to saved plans and favourites?
Favourites and recipe IDs stay unchanged. When you load a saved plan, Wochenbiss checks it against the current Halal, allergy and taste settings. Suitable ingredients are adapted and unsuitable meals replaced with allowed alternatives; the notification gives the number changed.
How is pantry stock handled in Halal mode?
An existing product is deducted as a suitable Halal alternative only if it is clearly suitable or you confirm that you have checked it. That confirmation means you checked the specific product; it is not certification by Wochenbiss.
Where are allergies and preferences stored?
They are stored locally on your device. The new, deliberately enabled encrypted connection on the same local network shares only selected household data, not personal dietary profiles with allergies or Halal settings. A previous household connection that is still active may share personal profiles including those entries. Check the connection type and sharing selection before syncing, and stop an older connection separately if needed. These entries are not sent to Mennilli Labs, shops or delivery services.
How do I share Wochenbiss with my household?
Open the settings cog and choose Connect household. iPhone, iPad and Android can connect on the same Wi-Fi network. The first device creates a local household and shows an invitation. The second scans it or enters its code. Compare the six-digit number on both devices and confirm only if they match. Shared data is transferred only afterwards. One active device connection is currently supported; pair again after a restart. Purchase entitlements and subscriptions are not transferred.
Does household sync need an account or cloud service?
No. Wochenbiss uses neither a Wochenbiss account nor a central database for this. The open devices connect directly over an encrypted connection. Both devices should be on the same Wi-Fi network when pairing.
Which household data is synced?
The new local connection can share selected planning fields and recipe choices, favourites, pantry amounts, shopping checkmarks and quantity adjustments, custom recipes, saved plans and cooking status. Personal dietary profiles, allergies, Halal settings, country and store selection stay private with this connection. An older household connection may also share personal profiles; check its sharing selection before syncing. Different private portion or exclusion profiles can still produce different calculated plans and shopping amounts. Delivery-service access details, passwords and payment data are not transferred.
Why does household sync not run continuously in the background?
Without a server, Wochenbiss can reach another device only while both apps are open and directly connected. Changes stay saved locally and are merged the next time you deliberately start a device sync.
What if two people edit the same content?
Wochenbiss compares the change time for each data section and uses the newer change. Keep both apps connected while making important changes to the weekly plan.
What do hob, oven and original recipe mean in preparation?
The appliances describe the intended method. Hob + oven, for example, means both are needed. Original recipe is the normal, unchanged method. An air fryer, microwave or other alternative is offered only if it actually changes the steps or total time. A time of 18 minutes always means the total recipe time, not 18 minutes per appliance.
What do preparation, cooking and finishing mean?
Preparation includes washing, peeling, cutting, weighing and draining. Cooking means heating, frying, boiling or baking. Finishing means combining, seasoning, plating and serving. Older vague instructions such as cook the main ingredients or cut fresh have been replaced with ingredient-specific steps.
How do quantities and pantry stock work?
Wochenbiss uses fixed units for each ingredient: solids in grams or kilograms for larger amounts, liquids such as milk and olive oil in millilitres or litres from 1000 ml, and individual items in pieces. Recipes list prepared vegetable stock in ml; shopping and pantry amounts use stock powder at 5 g per 250 ml. Manufacturers' ratios differ, so also check the jar. Under Adjust plan > Pantry, enter the amount in the unit shown beside the field. Current pantry stock is deducted once from the current plan's requirements.
Is pantry stock automatically used up after cooking?
No. It is planning stock. You update or clear it yourself. A change to the plan recalculates the deduction from the saved stock.
How do I use and share shopping?
Tick an item to mark it In cart; it stays visible and can be marked To buy again. Use the pencil to change an amount without losing the original calculation. Under Share & export, share or copy items still needed, or save a text file. You can also include items already in your cart. Pantry stock has already been deducted; custom amounts and product notes are retained. On iOS and Android, Share opens the system menu for installed apps such as Mail or WhatsApp.
How do I export to Apple Reminders?
Open Shopping > Share & export > Apple Reminders. After your confirmation, iOS asks for access. Each export creates a new Wochenbiss Shopping list with individual reminders. Existing lists remain unchanged. There is no automatic return sync: ticking an item in Reminders does not change Wochenbiss. If access was denied, change the permission in iOS Settings or use Share. This export is unavailable on Android and in the browser.
What data is included in a shopping export?
Only the selected shopping items, quantities, units, departments, shopping status and existing product notes, including Halal notes. Personal profiles and allergy entries are not exported. Check the preview before sharing. Delete exported copies in their destination yourself. Apple Reminders may sync through iCloud depending on your account settings.
How is a shopping amount calculated?
Each item shows the calculation: total plan requirement minus clearly matching pantry stock equals the shopping amount. A custom amount is marked separately, used for costs and sharing, and can be reset to the calculated amount.
What can I do with Siri?
On iPhone and iPad, Siri or the Shortcuts app can open Wochenbiss directly at the weekly plan, shopping list or recipes. For example: Open my shopping list in Wochenbiss. Siri does not change anything or place an order without your action.
What does Wochenbiss show on Apple Watch?
The Watch app shows a compact selection from the current weekly plan and the shopping list. You can mark shopping items as in your cart from your wrist. Sync runs through the paired iPhone; allergies, personal profiles, delivery-service access information and payment data are not sent to the Watch.
Why is Apple Watch not up to date immediately?
Open Wochenbiss briefly on the paired iPhone. The app then sends the current plan and shopping to the Watch. If the iPhone cannot be reached, the Watch keeps changes and sends them at the next available sync.
Are prices and budget amounts binding?
No. Budget guidance is a modelled estimate, not a live basket. Individual price records show only the particular provider and date, not the cheapest shop. Coverage counts ingredients with at least one sufficiently recent record from your selected providers. Different packs, branches or substitute products may have different prices and allergens.
What does an unknown or outdated price mean?
Without verified product matching, a suitable quantity basis, source and date, Wochenbiss shows no provider price record. Your own entries are labelled separately. Community observations become outdated after 30 days and retailer fetches after 7 days. Older records remain visible as historical information but do not count towards price coverage. Fetched does not mean someone confirmed the price in a shop. Even within these periods, a price is not guaranteed.
Can I save my own shopping prices?
Yes. Tap Add your price beside an ingredient. Enter the shop or branch, product, pack price, usable pack quantity and date. Choose g or kg, or ml or l; items counted as pieces stay as pieces. Use drained weight for canned foods where the ingredient specifies it. Enter unconditional prices only, not coupons or multi-buy offers. One personal entry per ingredient and country is retained, and you can edit or delete it.
How are my own prices calculated and stored?
Wochenbiss rounds required quantities up to whole packs. The total includes only ingredients with your own prices no older than 30 days and matching units; missing prices are not filled in. Different shops may be included; delivery charges are excluded. Older entries stay visible but do not count. Your prices stay on this device after restart. They are not automatically uploaded, synced with your household or included in the existing household snapshot. Entry and ticking items still work offline.
Does shopping work without a price connection?
Yes. Planning and ticking items remain available independently of price requests. Loaded price records are cached during the current app session, and their age is still checked. After an offline restart, prices may be unknown. No paid price subscription is started automatically.
What happens when I choose a delivery service?
Delivery services are optional. Wochenbiss copies the shopping list, opens the chosen provider and may offer search links. You confirm product choices, substitutes, delivery slot, final price, payment and order yourself with the provider.
Why is the REWE basket not filled automatically?
REWE does not provide this app with a public basket API. Wochenbiss therefore offers assisted shopping only. An email address or account note does not connect a private basket.
Does Wochenbiss store delivery-service passwords?
No. Wochenbiss does not ask for personal passwords or payment details. A genuine basket handoff would require official partner authorisation and a limited access token stored with encryption.
What does Carbohydrate awareness mean?
In a recipe, view estimated carbohydrates, sugars and fibre for a base portion, a person or the household. Optional personal limits are under Adjust plan > Allergies & taste. Wochenbiss does not calculate insulin doses or assess individual suitability for diabetes.
How do I delete my data?
Wochenbiss 1.0 requires no account. Delete the app through device settings to remove its local data. Delete any deliberately exported snapshot separately wherever you saved it.
What does Wochenbiss cost?
Free includes recipe search, one 7-day plan, the shopping list and dietary filters. Pro adds longer planning, multiple saved plans, person profiles, pantry, own recipes, importing Wochenbiss JSON recipe files and budget. Pro is offered as a monthly or yearly subscription on Apple devices and Android. Apple Family includes Pro with Apple Family Sharing for up to six people in an existing Apple family group. Sharing depends on the purchaser's settings, does not synchronise household data and does not grant an Android subscription. Available features depend on your installed app version and the relevant store offering. The store shows binding local prices, currency and billing periods before purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically and can be cancelled through your store. Settings > Plans & purchases also includes Restore purchases. No advertising or mandatory Wochenbiss account. TestFlight purchases are test purchases without real charges.
